DPRK people continue to mourn Kim Jong Il's death

PYONGYANG, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday continued to mourn the death of its top leader, Kim Jong Il.
Kim Jong Un, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), and other senior party, government and army officials visited Kim Jong Il's bier at Kumsusan Memorial Palace to pay their respects, official KCNA news agency reported.
KCNA reported Monday that Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the WPK, chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and supreme commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA), died from a great mental and physical strain at 8:30 a.m. Saturday (2330 GMT Friday), on a train during a field guidance tour.
Xinhua reporters on Tuesday saw mourners filing past huge portraits of the late leader erected in Kim Il Sung Square, the April 25 House of Culture and Pyongyang Indoor Stadium.
In central Pyongyang, many people gathered in front of the statues of his father Kim Il Sung at Mansu Hill and Kim Il Sung University to pay their respects.
Although most of the shops in the capital remained closed, traffic had returned to normal. Excavators were also seen operating at a construction site at Mansu Hill.
The DPRK media continued to issue articles and commentaries to commemorate and pay condolences to their late leader.
KCNA said Kim's death was the biggest loss of the WPK and DPRK revolution. The DPRK people would turn their sorrow into strength and courage and remain loyal to the guidance of Kim Jong Un, it said.
Rodong Sinmun newspaper printed a huge picture of Kim on the front page with the headline, "Long live great leader Kim Jong Il." The paper also issued a commentary saying Kim Jong Un was the spiritual support and hope of the DPRK party and people.
DPRK Central Television constantly played programs praising the achievements of Kim Jong Il.
On Tuesday, Chinese Ambassador Liu Hongcai visited Mansu Hill and laid a wreath before the statue of Kim Il Sung to express his condolences over Kim's passing.
Liu said Kim Jong Il, a great leader of the DPRK people and close friend of the Chinese people, had dedicated the whole of his life to the DPRK's socialist revolution and construction.
Liu said he believed, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, the DPRK people would turn sorrow into strength to construct their country and make a contribution to long-lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Chinese leaders offer condolences on Kim Jong Il's death

BEIJING-- Senior Chinese officials Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang offered their condolences on the death of DPRK leader Kim Jong Il at the Embassy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Beijing Wednesday.
All are members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. The other four members of the Standing Committee have also been to the DPRK Embassy to mourn Kim Jong Il's death.
On Tuesday, President Hu Jintao, who is also Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, expressed his condolences at the embassy.
Hu was accompanied by Wu Bangguo, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the top legislator, Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and Vice President Xi Jinping, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Hu stressed that it is the persistent policy of the Chinese government and the CPC to continuously consolidate and develop the traditionally friendly relations with the DPRK.
The late DPRK leader passed away from "great mental and physical strain" at 08:30 a.m. Dec. 17 (2330 GMT Friday), on a train during a field guidance tour, the DPRK's official KCNA news agency reported Monday.
