War crimes trial not transparent: BNP


 

Dhaka, Dec 29 (bdnews24.com) – BNP has once again said even though it wants the suspected war criminals tried but the process of the trial is not transparent.

"We have been saying that we want trial of war criminals. But the government launched the [war crimes] trial with a political motive," acting secretary-general of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters.

"The process through which the war crimes trial is being conducted now is not transparent. We have been repeatedly saying that war criminals will have to be tried in a transparent process," he added.

This comes more than three weeks after the main opposition had expressed no-confidence in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), dealing with the crimes, and demanded that all its proceedings be immediately stopped.

Two of its leaders and five top leaders of its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami are standing trial over alleged crimes against humanity during the nation's war of independence from Pakistan in 1971.

Senior party policymaker Moudud Ahmed at a news conference at the party's central office on On Dec 3.

The government formed the International Crimes Tribunal, lawyers' panel and an investigation committee on Mar 25 last year to try the 1971 war criminals.

Jamaat chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary-general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, executive council member Delwar Hossain Sayedee, assistant secretaries-general Mohammad Kamaruzzaman and Abdul Quader Molla, BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and former member of BNP founder Gen Ziaur Rahman's cabinet Abdul Alim were arrested on charges of crimes against humanity.
