Condoms gave a tough competition to roses this Valentines’ Day, with their sales running over a lakh on an online shopping portal. Snapdeal.com offered Durex condoms for R1 on February 14, and claims to have sold 1.5 lakh packets on that day alone. The Re 1 offer was an innovativeV-Day strategy that worked with the public as the shopping site not only managed to attract a lot of traffic but #brandedcondoms was even trending on microblogging site Twitter, all day. “Today #Happy ValentinesDay, #brandedcondoms and #durex are the trends... Tomorrow will be #ipill? #lol,” tweeted a user, IAmShradha.

“It’s a very cool idea. At least, it saves me the effort and embarrassment of going to a chemist shop to buy condoms,” says Rohit Mathur, 23, a corporate professional. But not everyone seemed happy. “Sale of condoms on V-Day is a bad idea as it promotes lust over love,” says Mukhti Parashar, 22.
However, the company officials say they did this to “promote safe sex”. “We always try running an innovation on days that people celebrate. Last year on Valentine’s Day, we promoted a dinner date with actor Gul Panag,” says Sandeep Komaravelly of snapdeal.com.
