America to work with BangladeshWashington has once again lauded the role of Dhaka, particularly of the Sheikh Hasina government, in combating terrorism and extremism.
The appreciation from the United States has been reflected in a letter written by US Congressman Peter T King, who heads the Committee on Homeland Security of the US House of Representatives, to Sheikh Hasina.
King, in the latest letter dated December 13, praised her resolve to address terrorism and extremism, following Washington’s acknowledgement for the prime minister’s courageous role in fighting out terrorist and extremist elements.
He said the United States had been reassured that the government of Premier Sheikh Hasina had all the positive attitudes and determination to address terrorism and extremism for contributing to international peace and stability.
The American Congressman in this letter acknowledged receiving Hasina’s letter written on November 22. He said the Hasina administration plays a very significant role in combating terrorism in Bangladesh. He further praised Hasina’s leadership and expressed willingness to work with the people of Bangladesh.
King is the chairman of a 33-member committee of House of Representatives working to combat terrorist activities worldwide.
In another letter sent to the prime minister recently, Peter King said her political stand and relentless efforts of her government to take terrorism head-on has not only curbed operations of the Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB) and Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) but also “expedited the US-sponsored battle against extremism.”
“Your actions have empowered your nation to stand firm against radical influences emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan,” the Congressman was quoted to have told Sheikh Hasina in the letter.
He emphasised the need for enhanced cooperation among nations for tackling terrorism on a war footing and saving life and property of innocent people.
“International cooperation is essential for thwarting terrorism and I would like to commend Bangladesh as a leading ally of the United States in this endeavour”, King wrote.
Other US leaders also appreciated Bangladesh’s role in combating terrorism and extremism and Dhaka’s support for America’s war on terror, a foreign ministry official said.
The official added that Bangladesh’s image in the international arena has improved in recent times.
“The negative image created between 2002 and 2008 is no more there and Bangladesh has now built its image internationally as a progressive democratic country free from terrorism, corruption and violation of human rights,” the official said, referring to the relentless efforts by the present government in this regard.
